As we’re now 8 months into our journey as a family, teething has been an unwanted addition. We’ve had an extra grumpy baby to deal with and sometimes even when she screams in pain that isn’t that much that will actually take the pain away. It's strange to say that she's been teething since she was 10 weeks old and alas, we've still yet to see a little white poking through. I’ve found a few things over the last couple of months that helps soothe and distract her from the pain.

To start with we use dummies. If you don't use them, then maybe skip this step it's personal preference. We’ve tried all sorts of different soothers but what works best for us is that we keep one in the freezer at all times. So when she’s chomping on everything but the kitchen sink, the cool contact helps soothe her gums. Cleverly, she moves the dummie to the area that bothers her the most. We tend to use Philips Avent dummies just as they are the ones she’s took best to.

Another tip is to freeze some grapes. I know grapes are the danger food that most parents worry about. I usually just pack a netted food feeder so its full for her to knaw on. If you’re still worried about it try other fruits.I recommend some cooled mango and kiwi fruit.

When her cheeks are fire engine red and she’s crying in pain I turn to Nurofen. It’s liquid ibuprofen. I would always advise checking with your pharmacist or using calpol first, but I know that Nurofen is great for inflammation.

To distract her we play with toys and games all day. Sometimes it just doesn’t settle her so I turn to the TV for her In the Night Garden fix. I try not to let her watch television all day or even much at all but it’s something she’s grown to love and it can get her out of the worst of moods. I regrettably have most of the characters as toys in my home now not by choice.

For my own fix and sanity I advise you to pick a good tea or coffee, whichever is your go to and try and enjoy a cuppa. It’s better said than done but I know that a more expensive coffee makes me feel better than my standard Nescafe. Babies are very tiring and hard work and we deserve something too, when they’re going through all of this.

Babies dribble a lot, a bit like them slobbery dogs but they go through clothes more than you can wash them. Dribble bibs come very handy especially those that are ‘dribble proof’.  My favourite ones are the Ikea bibs as they are the best ones I’ve ever used but they’re not the cutest looking and the velcro curls making them hard to fasten after a while. My other favourite is the Cheeky Chompers Neckerchew. It’s  double sided and uses poppers to hold it together. They sell the cutest designs for any stylish baby. The best thing about it is that it has a textured almost rubber part for teething babies and is great for them to chomp on. They’re not the cheapest bibs around at £12 a piece but are definitely worth the price tag.

Another thing to chomp on is a teething necklace. Teething necklaces became big in 2016 and it doesn’t look like they’re about to disappear any time soon. My daughter didn’t take to hers at first but now won’t let it go.  I have it tied to the pram at all times now so she can chew it while we’re out and about.  I would recommend it to anyone to try!

Last but not least comfort. Babies crave comfort all the time so lots of cuddles are needed but always snuggle with Imogen in my blanket or dressing gown. She also has her own little Comfortchew from Cheeky Chompers that’s like a security blanket and a teething toy all in one. It has little ribbon tags for sensory and a ring so we can attach this to her pram and car seat when we’re out and about too. It’s the only blanket that she’s attached herself to and it matches our Neckerchew aswell.

There are a lot of remedies and things that can ease babies pain or distract them from it but these are what I’ve fount that have worked best for us. What has worked best for you? I would love to know any tips!

Until next time,
